It's perfectly logical that animals aren't treated as equal to humans. Imagine what would happen; the already overworked courts would have to deal with a massive influx of cases, more prisons would have to be built, more time would have to be used for investigations. It's simply impractical.

A pet isn't property to a family it is part of the family, when it dies people are sad just as they are when a human family member dies. It may not be a person but it still matters and it's just immoral to let murdering them be ok. Killing animals is often a gateway kind of thing to murdering people, so I think people should definitely be punished for it. At least if it was a pet or protected species(that is illegal anyway) Maybe not an outright jail sentence but definitely community service. But this guy should definitely go to jail he's a sick bastard, nevermind having an explosive anyway, what the absolute f*** made him decide the appropriate action was to blow the poor thing up? There is no justification to that, it didn't happen by accident, he set it up with the sole intention of destroying the animal when it just wasn't necessary. Back to the gateway thing. What if he decides his daughter is possessed by a demon next? (or just anyone not sure he has kids) he should be punished for the murder of the dog because someone so stupid will just end up killing again but not with explosives, because that's the bad part as far as the law is concerned so if he doesn't do that he's in the clear. That's probably the kind of logic someone so messed up follows.

In this particular case, it's obvious that the man is mentally unstable, 'insane', so something's obviously going to be done.

I get that but you can hardly call it just, we're simply denying responsibility because we can't afford it, it's definitely not ok to murder pets anyway. If the economic situation were stable all round the world it should definitely be treated like murder of a human, depending on circumstances. It should still be looked in to a bit more though I feel, most serial killers start by killing defenseless animals and work their way up to human targets. I don't mean JAIL instantly but it should be investigated and if it turns out they killed many family pets previously or have any mental problems they should be kept under a watchful eye. An "oh well, it's just a dog" attitude just enables sick people like that to do what they want. Though yeah it would be hard to enforce this new kind of murder charge, at what point should it count? Jail for killing your goldfish? Is it ok because it was small? Or just as bad as killing a human? Would cost time and money we don't have to set it all up. I don't think this guy should simply be let out of jail after he's done time anyway he needs psychological evaluation for sure, just in case any demons possess the neighbours or everyone in the vicinity after he buys a gun.
